The Transport Department in West Bengal is planning to implement a new system to bring drivers of private vehicles under control. Each driver will be assigned a unique document identification verification number, allowing the department to identify who is driving the vehicle at any given time.
The department hopes this will improve safety for passengers and make it easier to track vehicles. The identification number will be linked to the driver's Aadhaar card and must be renewed annually.
The move comes after the recent murder of coal mafia Raju Jha in Burdwan, where identifying the driver of the vehicle proved difficult for police.
